ADR-091 decided `ConnectionCredentials.local_identity`; the code implemented
`tls_identity` (tasks/core/connection-credentials.md deferred the rename as
"path of least resistance" during the extraction). The tangle that made the
rename hard no longer exists, so align the code with the decision.
Scope is the `ConnectionCredentials` field + builder only:
- alknet-core/credentials.rs: field, with_local_identity, doc, test
- alknet-tls/client.rs: field access in TlsClientConfig::new, test builders, docs
- alknet-client/dial/quinn.rs: test builder
NOT renamed (distinct concepts sharing the words):
- StaticConfig.tls_identity (server-side static config; ADR-082/027/083)
- TlsIdentity enum type name
- alknet-tls server fn params named tls_identity (&TlsIdentity value)
Also fixes dial_iroh.rs doc comments that claimed the local key is extracted
from creds.local_identity — the key is actually on the pre-built iroh endpoint
(set at with_iroh time); the dial reads only creds.remote_identity and ignores
creds.local_identity (per client/README.md §iroh).
Architecture specs updated to match (call/client-and-adapters.md, tls/README.md,
client/README.md). Historical ADR context describing the old CallCredentials
field stays as-is; tasks/ and docs/research/ are historical artifacts.
Resolves follow-up #2 from the post-extraction spec sync (c6eef73).
Phase 0 of crate extraction. Purely additive — adds two small types
(ConnectionCredentials, RemoteIdentity) to a new credentials.rs module
in alknet-core. No other crates touched. All workspace tests pass.
The BidiStreamSource trait (ADR-070) made Connection hold Box<dyn
BidiStreamSource> so downstream crates can add connection shapes without
editing core — but the public constructor for that path was missing.
The source field is private; the channels crate (or any future crate)
had no way to build a Connection from its own BidiStreamSource impl.
The trait was unusable from outside core.
Add Connection::from_source(source: impl BidiStreamSource, alpn: Vec<u8>)
-> Self: the extension point. Takes impl BidiStreamSource (not Box<dyn>)
to match the ergonomic style of from_stream / from_bidi; boxes the
source internally. No feature gate (always available, like from_stream).
Initializes alpn and identity: OnceLock::new() the same as the other
constructors.
Test: a custom RecordingSource BidiStreamSource impl (not a built-in)
constructed via from_source, verifying remote_alpn / remote_addr /
accept_bi (round-trips real bytes via tokio::io::duplex) / open_bi
(StreamClosed) / close (records code+reason) all delegate to the custom
impl.
Verified: cargo test + clippy clean across default, --no-default-features,
--features iroh, --all-features; cargo check -p alknet-call succeeds
unchanged; cargo fmt --check passes.
Extract stream-yield ops from Connection into a BidiStreamSource trait;
Connection now holds Box<dyn BidiStreamSource> instead of the closed
ConnectionKind enum. Three crate-private impls wrap the existing
constructors: QuinnBidiStreamSource (feature quinn), IrohBidiStreamSource
(feature iroh), StreamBidiStreamSource (no gate, yield-once per ADR-065).
Public Connection API is preserved verbatim — handlers dispatch through
the trait object transparently.
The StreamBidiStreamSource::close impl prefixes code/reason with _ and
documents why they're ignored (the drop is the close — ADR-065). This
resolves the ADR-065 leftover clippy warning under --no-default-features
(REQ-CORE-02).
Add AuthContext::anonymous(alpn) convenience constructor (REQ-CORE-03):
sets identity/fingerprint/remote_addr to None, only alpn is populated.
Removes the four-None-field literal that recurred in handler POCs/tests.
Verified: cargo test + clippy clean across default, --no-default-features,
--features iroh, and --all-features; cargo check -p alknet-call succeeds
unchanged; cargo fmt --check passes.
Add ConnectionKind::Stream: a single read/write pair behind a
Mutex<Option<...>> that accept_bi yields once (then ConnectionClosed).
Add Connection::from_stream(send, recv, alpn, remote_addr) and
Connection::from_bidi(stream, alpn, remote_addr) constructors.
Rename the stream-level SendStreamKind::Mock / RecvStreamKind::Mock to
::Stream (they were already generic Box<dyn AsyncRead/Write> — the
wrong name). Rename from_mock to from_stream.
Remove MockConnection trait + ConnectionKind::Mock entirely. Migrate
all alknet-call test StubConnections to use from_stream with
tokio::io::sink() + tokio::io::empty() (immediate EOF on the read side
causes handle_stream to exit cleanly, then accept_bi returns
ConnectionClosed and the run_loop exits).
The yield-once accept_bi contract: QUIC yields many streams, everything
else yields one. Handlers that loop (TtyAdapter) get one iteration per
single-stream connection; handlers that call once (HttpAdapter) get the
stream directly. Both correct, no branching on transport.
This unblocks TCP+TLS listeners, SSH channel dispatch, WebTransport
streams, and wasm — all via from_stream, all through the same
HandlerRegistry, zero handler code changes.
See docs/research/transport-generalization/findings.md for the full
trace and the yield-once contract.
Implements the 4-task DAG for runtime-spawned resource ownership so
AccessControl::check can answer "does this identity own this specific
container/TTY/process" instead of relying only on static
Identity.resources grants.
1. core/ownership-store-trait: OwnershipProvider (sync read) +
OwnershipStore (async write) traits + InMemoryOwnershipStore +
OwnershipError in alknet-core. Fourth instance of the repo/adapter
pattern (ADR-033), mirroring CredentialStore/store.rs.
2. call/registry/operation-spec-resource-id-path: resource_id_path
field on OperationSpec — JSON pointer into input for resource ID
extraction. Single field addition, all ~40 construction sites across
alknet-call + alknet-http updated to pass None (no semantic change).
3. call/registry/access-control-ownership-check: check() signature
gains resource_id + Option<&dyn OwnershipProvider>. 3-case decision
tree: ownership Some + resource_id Some -> owns(); ownership Some +
resource_id None -> owns_any() (list scope-gate); ownership None ->
static Identity.resources fallback (backward compat). 7 call sites
updated to (None, None) — including a 7th in alknet-http/gateway_routes
not listed in the original spec.
4. call/registry/dispatch-resource-id-extraction: wire the dispatch
path. OperationContext gains ownership field; Dispatcher/CallAdapter
gain with_ownership_provider builders; invoke/invoke_streaming/
invoke_with_policy extract resource_id via spec.resource_id_path
and thread context.ownership to check(). extract_json_pointer helper
handles $.field syntax (graceful None on missing/non-string). 20
OperationContext literals updated across both crates.
Backward compatibility is load-bearing throughout: ownership=None
falls back to the existing static resource-check path. Deployments
without runtime-spawned resources wire nothing and behave identically.
821 tests pass workspace-wide (was ~770); clippy clean; fmt clean.
Task specs marked done.
Replace AcceptAnyServerCertVerifier (a security hole for X.509) with
verifier selection by PeerEntry presence (ADR-034 §3, OQ-29):
- build_client_auth presents the Ed25519 key as an RFC 7250 raw public
key client cert (replaces with_no_client_auth), activating the
PeerEntry fingerprint -> peer_id resolution path on quinn.
- select_server_verifier: Some(fingerprint) -> FingerprintPinVerifier
(fingerprint match for known peers); None -> WebPkiServerVerifier
(CA verification for public X.509 endpoints). None + Ed25519 raw key
fails closed at handshake (no CA to fall back to).
- FingerprintPinVerifier matches ed25519:<hex> (raw key extraction) and
SHA256:<hex> (DER hash); verifies handshake signatures via
verify_tls13_signature_with_raw_key / verify_tls12/13_signature.
- Extract shared fingerprint logic into alknet_core::fingerprint (pub
module) reused by endpoint (server-side) and call_client (client-side).
- remote_identity: None is load-bearing (not defaulted to placeholder).
- Integration tests updated to pin the self-signed server cert
fingerprint (the known-peer path).
Three tasks implementing ADR-027:
1. core/rawkey-decouple-from-iroh: TlsIdentity::RawKey now uses
Ed25519SecretKey (alknet-core-owned wrapper over ed25519_dalek)
instead of iroh::SecretKey. RawKeyCertResolver and Ed25519SigningKey
un-gated from #[cfg(all(quinn, iroh))] to #[cfg(quinn)] only.
Quinn-only builds (default) now support RFC 7250 raw-key identity.
iroh transport converts via iroh::SecretKey::from_bytes.
2. core/endpoint-request-client-cert: replaced with_no_client_auth()
with AcceptAnyCertVerifier — a custom ClientCertVerifier that
requests client certs but doesn't require them or verify against
a CA. alknet's identity model is fingerprint-based (the
authorized_fingerprints set is the trust anchor), not PKI-based.
Peer certs are extracted at the TLS layer for fingerprinting;
peers without certs connect normally.
3. core/acme-integration: TlsIdentity::Acme variant (domains,
cache_dir, directory, contact) + AcmeDirectory enum. TlsSetup
two-phase construction: synchronous for X509/RawKey/SelfSigned,
async for Acme (spawns AcmeState event loop, builds ServerConfig
with ResolvesServerCertAcme). acme-tls/1 ALPN added when ACME is
active; dispatch_quinn guard closes challenge connections
gracefully (challenge is TLS-layer-handled). acme feature gate
keeps rustls-acme out of non-ACME builds.
Workspace: build/test/clippy green across all 3 feature configs
(quinn-only, quinn+iroh, quinn+acme, all-features). 331 tests, 0
failures, 0 warnings.
W1 (call/protocol/abort-cascade-wiring): wire AbortCascade into
CallAdapter handle_stream for EVENT_ABORTED. Cascades with
AbortPolicy::AbortDependents, aborts root, no descendant frames on
wire (ADR-016 Decision 2). Two integration tests added.
W2 (core/endpoint-client-fingerprint): extract TLS client cert
fingerprint in dispatch_quinn (SHA256:<hex> of leaf cert DER via
peer_identity) and dispatch_iroh (ed25519:<hex> of peer NodeId).
Fingerprint format documented in auth.md. Server config change
(with_no_client_auth → request-but-don't-require) deferred to new
follow-up task core/endpoint-request-client-cert.
W3 (vault/mnemonic-debug-redaction): replace Mnemonic derive(Debug)
with manual redacting impl (phrase: "[REDACTED]"). Seed confirmed
no Debug impl. Redaction test added.
W4 (core/auth-apikey-resources): Option B — drop entry.resources from
spec. External identities (token/fingerprint) grant scopes only;
resource-scoped ACLs are composition-internal (ADR-015/022). auth.md
corrected + limitation documented. Two tests confirm empty resources.
review-post-impl-fixes: all 4 verified, workspace green (326 tests,
0 failures, 0 clippy warnings). Review #004 status → resolved.
Graph: 34 tasks, 12 gens.
The RawKeyCertResolver, Ed25519SigningKey, and std::path::Path imports
were gated on #[cfg(feature = "iroh")] but are only used in the quinn
TLS server-config path (build_rustls_server_config RawKey arm). With
iroh-only builds (--no-default-features --features iroh), these became
dead code and triggered clippy -D warnings failures.
Re-gated to #[cfg(all(feature = "quinn", feature = "iroh"))] so they
only compile when both features are active (the combination that
actually uses raw-key TLS via quinn). std::path::Path is now
#[cfg(feature = "quinn")] since it is only used by quinn's
load_cert_chain/load_private_key helpers.
Verified: cargo clippy passes with -D warnings across all four feature
combinations (none, quinn, iroh, quinn+iroh). cargo test --all-features
passes 55 tests. cargo fmt --check clean.
Implement CallConnection in protocol/connection.rs with Layer 2 imported-ops
overlay (Arc<RwLock<HashMap>>), register_imported/register_imported_all,
overlay_env() returning an OperationEnv that dispatches to imported ops,
and call()/subscribe()/abort() methods that open a stream, send call.requested,
register in PendingRequestMap, spawn a stream reader, and correlate responses
by ID. Connection drop drops the overlay. Exposed MockConnection +
Connection::from_mock in alknet-core for cross-crate testing. 9 new connection
tests (102 total in alknet-call).
Refs: docs/architecture/crates/call/call-protocol.md
Implements: ADR-012, ADR-017, ADR-024
Implements CallConnection in src/protocol/connection.rs representing an
established alknet/call connection (either direction). Holds the Layer 2
imported-ops overlay (ADR-024) as Arc<RwLock<HashMap>>.
- register_imported / register_imported_all add to the connection overlay
- overlay_env returns an OperationEnv dispatching to imported ops; contains()
returns true only for ops in the overlay
- call() opens a stream, sends call.requested, registers in PendingRequestMap,
spawns a stream reader, resolves on first call.responded
- subscribe() sends call.requested and yields call.responded until
call.completed/call.aborted via a SubscriptionStream wrapping the mpsc receiver
- abort() sends call.aborted for the request ID and removes the pending entry
- connection drop drops the overlay (no explicit deregistration needed)
Exposes MockConnection trait and Connection::from_mock in alknet-core so
cross-crate tests can construct mock connections without real QUIC. Removes
two unused test helpers in env.rs that triggered dead-code warnings under
-D warnings. Adds parking_lot dep for the overlay RwLock and pending Mutex.
9 new connection tests (102 total in alknet-call). Clippy clean.
Implements the foundational types in alknet-core/src/types.rs per the
core-types architecture (ADRs 002, 007, 014, 022):
- ProtocolHandler trait (alpn + async handle) with HandlerError
- Connection wrapping quinn/iroh via internal enum dispatch (feature-gated);
write-once identity via OnceLock, IdentityAlreadySet on second set
- SendStream/RecvStream concrete wrappers implementing AsyncWrite/AsyncRead
- BiStream convenience trait
- StreamError with canonical From<StreamError> for HandlerError
- Capabilities: non-serializable, Zeroize + ZeroizeOnDrop, immutable builder
API (new/with_api_key/with_http_token/get) backed by a Secret<String> wrapper
- Minimal Identity and AuthContext in auth.rs as the foundation the auth task
extends
13 unit tests cover Capabilities (build/get/clone/zeroize/redaction) and
Connection::set_identity (once succeeds, twice errors). Verified across
feature combos (default, no-default, iroh-only): build, clippy -D warnings,
test, fmt --check all clean.
(task: core/core-types)
Create crates/alknet-core with Cargo.toml (dependencies, feature flags
quinn/iroh), src/lib.rs declaring types/auth/config/endpoint modules, and
skeleton files for each module with doc comments and TODO markers. Add the
crate to the workspace members list.
Both quinn (default-on) and iroh (opt-in) are optional and can be active
simultaneously per ADR-010. Dual license MIT OR Apache-2.0 inherited from
the workspace.
Add http feature flag with axum, hyper, hyper-util, tower, and http-body-util
dependencies. Create http module with auth middleware (extracts Bearer token,
calls IdentityProvider::resolve_from_token, attaches Identity to extensions)
and router scaffold (default 404 fallback, no operational routes yet). Replace
send_fake_nginx_404 with axum router handoff when http feature is enabled;
fake 404 behavior preserved when http is disabled. Wire HttpInterface with
build_router() method and pass IdentityProvider through Server to handle_connection.
Implement the SSH session to call protocol bridge:
- Add FrameFramedReader/FrameFramedWriter for async I/O of length-prefixed EventEnvelope frames
- SshSession::recv() reads InterfaceEvent frames from the alknet-control:0 channel via mpsc
- SshSession::send() writes EventEnvelope frames to the alknet-control:0 channel via mpsc
- Add ControlChannelBridge implementing ControlChannelHandler for routing channel data
- SshHandler::channel_open_direct_tcpip routes alknet-control:0 to the bridge task
- Session Identity attached to every InterfaceEvent produced by recv()
- ControlChannelRouter gains take_handler() for non-control alknet-* channel routing
Implement RawFramingSession with tokio::io::split for read/write halves,
BufReader/BufWriter for buffered I/O, and decode_with_remainder for
partial frame reassembly. Add first-frame authentication via
IdentityProvider::resolve_from_token(). Add RawFramingConfig.auth
field for IdentityProvider reference. Update SshInterface test for
new RawFramingConfig shape.
Define the outbound authentication abstraction in alknet_core::credentials:
- CredentialProvider trait with get_credentials and refresh_credentials
- CredentialSet enum with ApiKey, Basic, Bearer, S3AccessKey, OidcToken, Custom variants
- ConfigCredentialProvider reads credentials from DynamicConfig.credentials
- SecretStoreCredentialProvider stub returns None for all lookups (Phase 3)
- Wire CredentialProvider into OperationEnv via credentials() method
- Add credentials HashMap field to DynamicConfig
Per ADR-035: split Interface trait into StreamInterface (stream-based, SSH/RawFraming)
and MessageInterface (request/response, HTTP/DNS). Remove TransportKind::Dns (DNS is
a MessageInterface). Change WebTransport { host } to { server_name: Option<String> }.
Restructure ListenerConfig from flat struct to enum with Stream/Http/Dns variants.
Add doc comments and TODO markers to SshSession::recv() and send()
explicitly marking them as Phase 1 stubs. Notes that call protocol
event bridging from SSH channels is planned for Phase 2/3.
New Phase 1 modules should follow the existing pattern of referencing
ADR numbers in module-level doc comments for discoverability, matching
the style in transport/mod.rs.
ForwardingAction, TargetPattern, ForwardingRule, OperationType,
InterfaceConfig, InterfaceKind, DynamicConfig, and CallError are all
likely to gain variants/fields in future phases. Marking them
#[non_exhaustive] now prevents downstream breakage when new
variants/fields are added. Added constructor methods for types that
are constructed from other crates.
parse_proxy_config was using expect()/unwrap()/panic!() which would
crash the process on malformed proxy config strings instead of
returning a descriptive error. Now returns ConfigError::ProxyConfigInvalid
with the specific issue (bad scheme, bad address). Added tests for
invalid scheme, invalid address, and end-to-end from_serve_options.
- SshInterface implements Interface trait with accept() method
- SshSession implements InterfaceSession trait (stub for call protocol events)
- RawFramingInterface is type-only stub (Phase 4+ for DNS, WebTransport)
- TransportKind consolidated into transport module with Display, PartialEq, Eq
- ListenerConfig gains interface_kind field for (Transport, Interface) pairs
- SshInterface wraps existing russh handler logic (SshHandler)
- Auth delegation through IdentityProvider (not embedded in SshInterface)
- Channel routing through session to Layer 3 (forwarding policy)
- Server accept loop uses (Transport, Interface) pairs
Per ADR-026: SSH is Layer 2, not Layer 1. This is the highest-risk Phase 1
task, implementing the Interface trait to separate transport from interface.
- Add reloadAuth(), reloadForwarding(), reloadAll() methods to AlknetServer
- Add NAPI type definitions: AuthConfigNapi, ForwardingPolicyConfig, ForwardingRuleConfig
- Refactor NapiServerHandler to use ArcSwap<DynamicConfig> for atomic config swaps
- Add ConfigReloadHandle::dynamic_arc() accessor for sharing ArcSwap between NAPI and accept loop
- Add ipnetwork dependency to alknet-napi for TargetPattern CIDR parsing
- Add builder functions for AuthPolicy and ForwardingPolicy from NAPI config types
- All swaps are atomic via ArcSwap per ADR-030
Add Layer 2 interface abstraction per ADR-026:
- Interface trait with accept() and associated Session type
- InterfaceConfig enum with Ssh and RawFraming variants
- SshInterfaceConfig with auth, forwarding, host_key fields
- RawFramingConfig (minimal, no SSH-specific config)
- InterfaceSession trait with recv()/send() producing InterfaceEvent frames
- InterfaceEvent wraps EventEnvelope with optional Identity
- Resolves OQ-IF-01: every session produces EventEnvelope frames
via InterfaceSession, making Layer 3 interface-agnostic
- Valid (Transport, Interface) pair enumeration with
TransportKindBase and is_valid_pair validation function
- Module re-exported from lib.rs
